The University of York started life in the 1960's and has gone on the become on the top universities in the UK with a strong reputation in Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. York regularly appears in the top ten in the league tables with many departments going further and being in the top five. The recent RAE results put York's research output as Internationally Excellent meaning students are being taught by some of the world leading experts in their chosen field. Teaching is also important at York and students regularly rank teaching at York as some of the best in the UK. York is a collegiate university similar to Oxbridge, but at York the college system is mainly used for accommodation (which is guaranteed to all first year students) and for sporting and social activities. York is a campus university with over 450 acres of landscaped parkland at the centre of which is a large lake and which is also a mile from the centre of the beautiful and historic York.
