The BSO is the UK’s oldest and largest school of osteopathy. Now based in Southwark, central London, it was founded in 1917. Its Patron is HRH The Princess Royal, Princess Anne. It is also registered UK charity dedicated to educating osteopaths, treating patients and pursuing osteopathic research. Since 2008 the BSO has offered a Master of Osteopathy (M.Ost) degree – an integrated undergraduate masters programme validated by the University of Bedfordshire. The course has recognised qualification status which allows graduates to apply for registration with the General Osteopathic Council, a legal requirement for anyone practicing as an osteopath in the UK. The majority of BSO graduates are working as osteopaths within six months of graduation. The BSO also offers postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes, and has a pioneering osteopathic research department supporting research at all levels, including undergraduate. Its teaching centre houses one of the best osteopathic libraries in the world, consulted by health care practitioners worldwide. The BSO runs the largest osteopathic clinical centre in Europe, based on Southwark Bridge Road. This offers over 40,000 patient appointments per year – including specialist clinics for children, expectant mothers, people with sports injuries and those living with HIV/AIDS. It gives students ongoing clinical experience, supervised by tutors who are practicing osteopaths.
