The universities grant scholarships because of outstanding academic achievements, but also because of the financial situation of the applicant. However, the scholarships offered are different from university to university, and most of the offers for international students are also rather limited. In addition, scholarships for international students are mainly reserved for postgraduate studies.
In any case, you should apply for a scholarship at an early stage; it is recommended that you do it one year before. In the database of the British Council you can find out which scholarship is granted for which course of study and the countries of origin in question.
The first approach point, if you interested in receiving a grant of study in Great Britain, is the British Council in your own country. There, you will get information about the various possibilities.
For international students who qualify through outstanding achievements, there are several organizations that award scholarships. Usually, these are claimed only in the context of post-graduate studies.
Depending on the country of origin and the current stand of the studies, the following grants are possible:
• Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellow Plan (CSFP): in exceptional cases also for undergraduate studies, grant between one and three years, to cover study and living costs, only for students from the Commonwealth;
• Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme : covers study and living costs, especially for students from developing countries of the Commonwealth who study fields relevant to development;
• Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (ORSAS): the grant compensates only for the difference between the home fees and the international fees, living expenses must be paid by the student himself;
• Royal Society Fellowship : grant for PhD researchers from Asia and North America, only science, not longer than one year;
• Marshall Scholarships and Fulbright Scholarships : only for American students, with possibility of grant between one and three years.
