Visa and Residence Permit

Citizens of the EEA countries and Switzerland do not need a visa to live, work and study in Great Britain. The citizens of all other states must apply at the British embassy in their country for an 'entry clearance ' permit. This permit gives them the right to a stay for a period of six months .

The citizens of the United States and the Commonwealth countries are considered 'non-visa nationals ' and do not require visas. The 'entry clearance' permit can nevertheless bring them great benefits. It is thus easier to extend the stay, visa problems that may occur can be more easily regulated within the UK, and it is possible to work part-time while studying. You have to apply for an 'entry clearance ' permit at the British Embassy in your country. You have to pay a fee of £ 99 for the application.

The application forms are available at the Embassy, but they can also be downloaded on the Internet.

The following documents must be added to the application:

•    a valid passport,
•    a passport photo
•    the application fee in the local currency
•    documents showing that the entry conditions are met (the study document).

On the Internet page Visa4UK you can go through step by step and find out whether you need a visa and, if necessary, apply immediately on-line.

Before entering Great Britain, the question of the visa should be clarified no matter the case. Besides, you must prove that you can finance your studies without taking up the financial support of the British state or having to work. The British Council offers information to entry formalities and visas as downloads.
