The program Erasmus Mundus supports universities as well as individuals who graduate a stay abroad within the framework of the postgraduate study (master or doctorate) or research and apprenticeship.

For the academic year 2008/09, for example, approximately 2000 students and 450 teachers from outside Europe got an Erasmus Mundus scholarship with which they studied one or two years in Europe, did a master, taught there or did research.

Erasmus Mundus 2009-2013 represents the second phase of the program. The aims of the first phase (2004-2008) will be pursued and extended fundamentally. While up to now predominantly students, doctoral candidates and graduates from third countries were promoted for a study trip or research stay in Europe, now the scholarships also apply to stays of EU citizens in third countries. Now, in addition, the program has clearly more money at its disposal: if the budget in the first phase amounted altogether to 609 million Euros, it is raised for the phase of 2009-2013 presumably to over 950 million Euros.
