State Funding If you don’t have enough money to pay for your studies by yourself, and are getting little financial support from your parents, you can get help from the state.

The Dutch government is attempting to make its national higher education as accessible as possible to students and mid-career professionals from other countries. IB-groep is the institution that deals with tuition fees, loans and grants within the country. The annual tuition fee for enrolment in a degree program or course at a Dutch higher education institution starts at approximately 1,500 Euros for EU students. There are two types of grants or loans available from the IB-groep to students in the Netherlands.
Loan Tuition Fees
This is a loan for up to a maximum of 1,538 Euros per academic year. You pay this money back without interest when you finish or quit your studies. Applicants must:
• be a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland;
• be under the age of 30 when applying for the loan tuition fees;
• be enrolled as a full-time student for an accredited course at a funded or recognized institute of higher education or university;
• have a social security number in the Netherlands;
• have a bank account (other than a savings account) in the Netherlands.
Study Grant
A study grant comprises a performance grant, a loan and a public transport pass. It is available for those who meet the following criteria:
• you are under 30 years of age;
• you are Dutch*;
• you attend a full-time or dual HBO course or a university study.
* If you do not have the Dutch nationality but do live in the Netherlands, you may be eligible for a student grant in some cases. Follow the nationality chart to find out whether you can apply for a student grant.
