Since the 1999 reform, the higher education system in Italy is made up of three cycles .

Undergraduate Studies (first cycle)

The first cycle consists of the so-called Corsi di Laurea (CL ) and Corsi di Master Universitario di 1 ° livello (CMU1 ).

Corsi di Laurea (CL)

The Corsi di Laurea corresponds with the German Bachelor's degree programs and is aimed at both the teaching of basic scientific methods and contents, and the acquisition of specific professional skills.

The entry requirement for a Corso di Laurea is an Italian secondary school diploma or an equivalent degree from abroad. In addition, the approval may still be subject to other conditions. The CL studies last for three years and include the acquisition of 180 credit points.

Corsi di Master Universitario di 1° livello (CMU1)

The CMU1 are programs to consolidate the scientific knowledge or the higher vocational education, to which one is admitted with a Laurea or a foreign Bachelor degree. For the CMU1 also there may be other, subject-specific admission requirements. The CMU1 take at least a year and include the acquisition of at least 60 credit points.

Advanced Degrees (second cycle)

Corsi di Laurea Magistrale/Specialistica (CLM)

The objective of CLM is to give students an education of high level, and to enable their career entry in senior positions.

Admission to the CLM requires a Laurea or a comparable foreign degree (Bachelor). The program lasts two years and includes the acquisition of a maximum of 180 points credit. To obtain the Laurea Specialistica , one has to produce a total of 300 credit points (these include the credit points from the previous Laurea ). For the successful finalization of the studies, you have to write in addition a scientific thesis.

A limited number of CLS , which are governed by EU regulations (CLS in surgery, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, architecture), ask for a secondary school certification and an aptitude test as entry requirements. These courses last for five years (medicine and surgery 6 years).

Corsi di specializzazione di 1° livello (CS1)

The goal of the CS1 is to provide knowledge and skills to practice a profession in a higher position. These courses are offered only based on specific Italian laws and EU regulations. To be approved, you need a Laurea or a comparable foreign degree (Bachelor), and you also need to pass an aptitude test. To conclude a CS1 , you need 300 to 360 credit points (which include acquired credit points during the Laurea ). A CS1 takes between two and three years.

Corsi di Master Universitario di 2 ° livello (CMU2)

The CMU2 are programs to consolidate the scientific knowledge or the higher vocational education, to which you can be admitted only if you have a Specialistica a Laurea or a comparable foreign degree (Diploma, Master). In addition, there may be other, subject-specific admissions requirements. A CMU2 takes at least one year. To receive the degree of Master Universitario di 2 ° livello , you must have earned at least 60 credit points.

Study programmes of the third cycle

Corsi di Dottorato di Ricerca (CDR)

The objective of the CDR is the acquisition of correct methods of scientific work or professional knowledge of a higher level. They may provide specific teaching methods such as the application of new technologies abroad or internships in research laboratories. For the acquisition of the Doctorate title, you have to write a Doctorate thesis.

The admission requirements are a Laurea Specialistica or a comparable foreign degree (Diploma, Master), and an aptitude test, also. The course lasts for at least three years; at the end you will receive the title of Dottore di Ricerca .

Corsi di Specializzazione di 2° livello (CS2)

The aim of CS2 is to provide knowledge and skills to practice a profession in a higher position. These courses are offered only based on specific Italian laws and EU regulations. To be admitted, you need a Laurea Specialistica or a comparable foreign degree (Diploma, Master). You must also successfully participate in an aptitude test. The average duration is one year, except for CS2 of medicine which will take up to five years.

Types of Degrees

The transmitted contents of each degree program shall be determined by the respective university. However, the universities for the Corsi di Laurea and the Corsi di Laurea Specialistica must meet certain minimum requirements, which are set at a national level for the comparison of similar studies. The national minimum conditions may determine in any case more than two thirds of each academic process (curriculum ).
