Because of the federal structure of the German state the costs of studying also differs in the separate federal states. In some federal states tuition fees from up to 500 Euros were introduced during the last years. At that time many master programs were already subject to charge. Ask, if possible, at the university where you want to apply. You will receive all the information from the Student Registration Office.

Tuition fees for foreign students

Special rules are applied for international students who are not members of the EEA countries (European Economic Area) or Switzerland. Therefore, it is important to inform yourself if possible in advance from the respective university. The Student Registration Office offers information about whether tuition fees are raised or are planned.

Other fees

Long-term fees

The students who study longer than the intended number of semesters must consider the possibility of having to pay raised expenses, because most federal states raise long-term tuition fees. Who clearly crosses the average study period, pays up to 800 Euros per semester, in addition! The fees will be after approximately seven years meaning 14 semesters of study payable.

Semester contribution

Regardless of eventual tuition fees, students must pay a semester contribution when they register, respectively when they re-register - this is normally not higher than 100 Euros. First of all, the Student Service, but also the Student Council is co-financed by the semester contribution. In many larger university cities, a term ticket is also acquired together with the semester contribution which makes possible the free use of bus and lane (railway).

A current overview of the tuition fees, semester fees and administrative costs in the 16 states can be found on the internet site of the Deutschen Studentenwerks (German Student Service).
