Money, how much do you need to survive

Living Costs Living costs naturally depend on your life style and in which city you live. However, in general, large cities are more expensive than rural areas. In this section, you can see on average how much money you should set aside for various expenses.

The living costs for students vary from city to city and depend on the individual standard of living. However, for students there are many privileges, for example, for public means of transport, museums and so on. Simply take your student's identity card and ask!

International students should dispose of at least 643 traceable Euros per month. This is 7.716 Euros per academic year. The living costs in Germany are rather high compared to many other European countries. Therefore, it is important to always have a small cash reserve for unplanned issues.

When you make the calculation of the budget, you should include the fixed expenses for study.

In addition, there are also the following:

Rent (incl. additional costs) 250 Euro
Nourishment
160 Euro
Clothes 60 Euro
Travel expenses (public means of transport / car)
86 Euro
Health insurance 60 Euro
Telephone/Internet/Radio-and TV fees
50 Euro
Working material / learning aid (books and the like) 37 Euro
Sum
703 Euro

Further can the following expenses come into question:

Semester fee: 50 to 250 Euros (1 x per semester). These are not tuition fees! The semester fee can finance activities of the university administration (for registration and re-registration), of the Student Services (Studentenwerk) and the Student Council. In some universities the term ticket is also enclosed in the semester fee.

Costs for working materials and excursions: on average 200 Euros per term (according to demand). How high these costs are in detail, depends very much on the field of study. First of all, in the study of humanities only additional costs result mostly from the purchase of books.

Contributions to the health insurance (monthly): see health insurance.

Tuition fees (1 x per term / not in all universities and not in all courses): approximately 500 Euros, see tuition fees.
