Those who apply for studying in a German university and are not from the EU or the EEA need a visa. Exempt from a visa are those who come from Australia, Japan, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, USA, Switzerland, Honduras, Monaco and San Marino.
There are different kinds of visa. A tourist visa is not a study visa and it won't be as tourists can't study in Germany. Then you should pay attention to which word is on your visa. For international students there are three kinds of visas:
1. a language course visa, which cannot be transformed into a student visa.
2. study applicant visa for three months. It´s valid if you still don´t have your confirmation for a Higher Education Institution. After the confirmation it must be converted into a student visa.
3. visa for study intentions. To get this visa you need the confirmation from the institution where you are going to study and a verification saying that you have an economic stability for the period you are going to stay in Germany.
For the application for a "Study applicant visa" the following documents are necessary:
1. a valid passport
2. passport photos
3. an admission qualification (recognized in Germany)
4. a confirmation of your previous studies (if it exists)
5. a confirmation of your economic stability for the year.
