General information

Since the beginning of 2009 a new regulation concerning tuition fees has been in force. According to this revised provision students do not have to pay tuition fees if they are:

•    Austrian citizens
•     EU/EEA nationals
•     Citizens of a country that Austria grants, due to international treaties, the same rights as Austrians and
•     within the minimum study time plus two additional semesters – in case you are enrolled in more than one degree program, tuition fees are due as soon as you exceed the minimum study time plus two semesters in one of the degree program.

The Austrian Student Union (Österreichische Hochschülerschaft ) (students’ representation body) fee (at present EUR 15.00) and an accident and liability insurance fee (EUR 0.86) have to be paid. These two fees have to be paid in any case, even if the tuition fees are reduced by the university or the student is exempted from paying tuition fees.

Fees for the foreign students

All other students, especially from countries other than Austria or EU, have to pay a tuition fee of EUR 363,36 (plus the Austrian student Union and insurance fee) each semester.

If the tuition fees are paid after the general enrollment period but still within the additional enrollment period (which lasts until November 30th for the winter semester and April 30th for the summer semester), the tuition fees will increase by 10%.

If you are admitted to study at several universities simultaneously, you only have to pay the tuition fee at one university. You, however, have to notify all other universities in writing and inform them at which Austrian university you paid the tuition fee.

Other fees

In Vienna, the Wiener Linien offer a semester ticket, valid from October till January (winter semester) and from March till July (summer semester). Between the semesters it's possible for students to buy a cheaper monthly ticket (Euro 29,50). The prices of the semester ticket differ from town to town and amount from Euro 50,50 to Euro 128,50.
