STUDENT ACCOUNT

In order to open one need an ID and a registration card. Don’t forget also your student’s card!

The offers of different bank institutions are more or less the same and all of them guarantee you:

•    Free bank account
•    Free electronic card
•    Free online-banking

The students account is valid at least up to 27 years of age.

Hint: some of the banking institutions offer students some very cheap courses, seminars, etc.

BANKS IN AUSTRIA

In Austria there are many banks and Sparkassen. Sparkassen are local institutes with public guarantee. In case of the foreigners, it’s always advisable to use a big, international bank, which may also have brunches in their own countries.

The opening hours may vary from bank to bank but most of them are open during the week from 09:00-16:00. In the more rural areas the banks may be closed for a lunch break. However, most of them have electronic terminals with you may use to pick up the money or to transfer it.

ATMs

The ATMs are called in Austria Bankomaten. Contrary to other countries, using them is free of charge. The maximum one can pick up on one day is around Euro 400, and in case of the foreigners – less. One can use the most popular cards (Maestro, Mastercard, VISA, Cirrus) to pick up the money at any ATM. The only fee to be paid is for picking up money from an account abroad.
