Health Insurance

Students admitted to an Austrian university or university of arts or UAS degree program as regular degree program students may take out comprehensive health insurance with one of the local public carriers (Österreichische Gebietskrankenkasse).

This insurance is only available to Austrians and foreigners who have established a legal residence in Austria (and fulfill several requirements regarding duration of studies, change of study programs, income, study programs already completed). Forms to apply for this insurance coverage are available at the respective Gebietskrankenkasse branch offices and the Austrian Student Union (ÖH – Österreichische Hochschülerschaft).

The insurance premium for this coverage currently amounts to EUR 23.26 per month for students. Students from EU/EEA countries who are in possession of a valid health insurance in their home countries need the “European Health Insurance Card”.

Students who do not meet these requirements have to take out insurance with private insurance companies or the local insurance carriers (Gebietskrankenkassen) themselves.

General Insurance:

If the students insurance is out of the question a general insurance may be taken out.

An insurance costs at the moment Euro 333,59 but its height can be lowered after submission of documents proving one’s difficult financial situation.

ÖH-Accident insurance

All the students who are members of the ÖH receive an automatic casualty- and third party liability insurance.
