There are 18 universities and numerous Universities of Applied Sciences and private universities in Austria. The biggest one in Vienna, founded in 1365, offers 135 subjects at 17 faculties. Also the University of Graz, Salzburg and Innsbruck are popular and well frequented. The Republic of the Alps and the Danube has two technical universities (one of them in Vienna) as well as numerous Universities of Applied Sciences. Also the five Art and Music Academies are popular among the foreign students as they offer the summer courses.

Apart from the "classic" universities, which offer a wide variety of disciplines, there are a number of specialist universities, e.g. the medical or technical universities, the universities of economics as well as the six universities of the arts: www.oead.at.

Since 1999 it's also possible to study at a private university in Austria. The most popular programs are: Economics, Tourism, (Bio-) Technology, Media and Design and Social Studies.
