From Bachelor till Master, an Overview

Degree programs

Austria offers not only the traditional degree programs. Apart from the public and private universities it's also possible to study at one of the Universities of Applied Sciences.

A traditional diploma program provides extensive academic and/or artistic pre-professional education and conclude with the award of a diploma: Magistra or Magister in most disciplines or Diplomingenieur(in) for engineers. Duration: 4–6 years.
Medicine and dentistry degree program conclude with a doctoral degree.
Duration: 6 years.

The bachelor and master study programmes

At the moment degree program in certain fields are divided into

1. Bachelor studies, which conclude with the degree of Bakkalaurea or Bakkalaureus.
Duration: 3–4 years.
2. Master studies, which require the successful completion of a bachelor study program and conclude – like the traditional diploma studies mentioned above – with the academic degree of Master. Duration: 1–2 years.

Doctoral studies (PhD)

Doctoral studies are based on the successful completion of diploma or master degree programs and are conceived to demonstrate the ability of autonomous research. They conclude with the degree of Doktor(in). Duration: 2 or more years.

Joint diploma programmes:

The Joint diploma programme is a regular course organized and run according to the agreement between one or more Austrian and foreign universities or UAS. This agreement must be specific about what a given student should accomplish during the studies at the participating universities. What is more, a common system regarding the grades and exams, e.g. on the basis of the ECTS , must be agreed upon.
